Repair Mapping
Symptom, module, part, then action, from 87 hobby-repair coffee machines.
This page is a draft of an interactive figure from hobby-repair coffee-machine records. The classification and wording will be updated after the PLATE (Product Lifetimes And The Environment) conference paper. Questions: PLATE26@sude.be.
An example selects the problem slot and module it belongs to. Clear selection returns to all modules.

Flow widths count classified problem entries. The last column separates physical repair from economic, repairability, and part-availability barriers.

Select a flow or part to inspect the records. Diagram counts remain those of the full current view.
Each row is one classified problem. The machine number is the dossier: one repair file for one machine. The second number is the first or additional problem in that file.

How to read this figure
- Ribbon width counts classified problem entries, not machines. A first problem and an additional problem on the same machine are separate rows. They are not a sequence.
- The four columns are symptom group, affected module, part, then the repair action or the reason repair stopped.
- Not economically viable, not repairable, and part unavailable are barriers. They record why repair stopped. They are not repair steps.
- Other parts means that part was recorded only once in the full set. Select the group to see the individual part name.
- Filters change the diagram. Selecting a flow highlights that path and lists the matching records. The counts printed on the diagram stay those of the current filter.
- Classifications come from the structured fields. They are not inferred from free-text notes. Missing and unknown values stay visible.
Definitions and source
The figure uses the structured classifications from Hobby Repair Coffee machine repair data(1).xlsx. The Part column uses the specific-part field. The mechanism field remains in the tooltips and records. Diagnoses are not inferred from narrative notes, and the source workbook is unchanged.
The complete view contains 110 classified problem entries from 87 machines. A machine can contribute its two main problems, each counted once in every column. The 23 dossiers with no module problem coded are outside this diagram. This is separate from the researcher’s count of 18 machines with no reported issues. First and additional are record slots, not evidence of causal order or recurrence. A dossier is one machine’s repair file: the machine number in the table below.
The threshold is two problem entries in the full dataset, counted separately within each module. Parts below this threshold are grouped under Other parts for that module. This assignment stays fixed when filtering, and all records retain their original part names and links to actions. The only synonym consolidation is Grinder stones into Grinding stones; original wording remains in the table and CSV. An empty or None part field is displayed as Part not specified. Unknown is retained. Identical part names in different modules remain separate nodes.
Symptom groups match the earlier diagram. Exact symptoms remain in the table. Missing parts are grouped under Missing items; rinse labels under Rinsing; non-earth-leakage labels under Leakage; coffee, grinder and bean labels under Coffee or grinding; power and heating labels under the corresponding group; remaining noise labels under Noise; other specified labels under Warnings or controls; empty or unknown labels under Unspecified.
Cleaning combines Part Cleaned and Module Cleaned. Repair or rebuilding combines Part Repaired, Part Rebuilt and Module Rebuilt. Reassembly or reset combines Part Reassembled, Module Reassembled and Reset machine. Repair barriers are shown separately as Not economically viable, Not repairable, and Part unavailable. They describe the recorded reason for stopping or not completing repair; diagnostic work or repair attempts may already have occurred. These codes do not enumerate every attempted operation or establish an individual action’s success.
